HIGHLIGHTS - Larne 4-0 Crusaders

Players were compelled to pay a match fee of two pence before they could take the field; a strict "no pay, no play" club policy was enforced.

The very first competitive game of which there is any existing written record was on 10 December It came in the North Belfast Alliance against opponents named Bedford at Alexandra Park and the report states that, "after a splendid game Crusaders won by 5 to 2.

Crusaders went on to compete in the Dunville Alliance, Ormeau Junior Alliance, Alexandra Alliance, Woodvale Alliance and Irish Football Alliance the latter of which they won three years in a row from — until their election to the Irish Intermediate League in The Crues rapidly became one of the top intermediate sides in the country, and won an impressive collection of trophies, including the Intermediate League championship six times in ten years from — The side also reached the Irish Cup semi finals three times in the s.

The first came in the —24 season, where they were defeated by that season's Irish League champions Queen's Island in a replay at Pirrie Park.

In the —25 season the Crues knocked out senior sides Larne and Belfast Celtic before being halted by Glentoran at The Oval in the semi finals who also went on to be champions that year.

They reached the semi-finals once again in , losing 2—4 at home to derby rivals Cliftonville. The Crues also reached the final of the Belfast Charities Cup in losing to Glentoran , also an impressive achievement as the competition was open to all senior clubs in Belfast and the surrounding area.

Despite these feats, repeated applications for entry to the senior Irish League were turned down. The frustration at the club was such that serious consideration was given to making membership applications either to the Scottish Football League or to the League of Ireland.

However, the Second World War intervened and no football at all was played by the Crues between April and September Crusaders began competing once more in the Intermediate League after the war, beginning with the —46 season.

Crusaders won the —49 Intermediate League with a record number of points, and coupled with the vacancy created by the dramatic withdrawal of Belfast Celtic from the senior ranks in , Crusaders were finally elected to the senior Irish League in time for the start of the —50 season.

Morrison was the club's top scorer of their first senior season with 11 goals in all competitions. The Crues' first league match took place on 26 November, a 1—4 defeat to Linfield at Windsor Park , and their first victory came on 10 December away to Ballymena United by 3—1, but the side would have to wait until 1 April for the first league win at Seaview, with a 4—1 victory over Glenavon.

The season was tough going for the 'Hatchetmen', as they were also known, and they had to apply for re-election after finishing in 11th place out of 12 clubs.

As has always been the case, however, Crusaders never lacked determination. On 17 May they participated in their first senior final, the Festival of Britain Cup final, which they lost 0—3 to Ballymena United.

Under the player-managership of Jackie Vernon they recovered to win their first senior trophy in the —54 season by defeating Linfield 2—1 in the final of the Ulster Cup.

The s were not easy in spite of the presence in the side of some excellent individuals and the end of the —58 season saw another application for re-election.

The decade also saw the emergence of Curry Mulholland , who represented the club from until , setting a goalscoring record of which would not be beaten until the s.

The s brought much more success. On 17 May they won the County Antrim Shield for the first time, repeating the feat in with a 6—0 victory over Larne this was the joint-biggest margin of victory in the final of the competition until Linfields 9—1 victory over Bangor in With Jimmy Murdough as coach they also picked up another Ulster Cup final win on 1 October , with a reply victory of 1—0 over Glenavon.

These successes were overshadowed by two unexpected victories in the Irish Cup finals of and against the might of Glentoran and Linfield respectively.

Also in , they narrowly missed out on winning the Blaxnit Cup and becoming champions of all of Ireland , losing 3—4 on aggregate to Shamrock Rovers.

The s also saw the emergence of some of the greatest players in Crusaders' history, such as Albert Campbell , who was the club's most capped international player until surpassed by Colin Coates , Danny Trainor , Joe Meldrum, Walter McFarland and Danny Hale, who scored an incredible goals in just four seasons, including a club record of 55 goals in the —66 season , which still stands to this day.

Jimmy Todd had won the second of those Irish Cups with the side in , however by the early s the Crues had declined slightly as the side of the s broke up.

Todd was replaced with Billy Johnston in early , and he set about restructuring the squad. Under Johnston unprecedented success was to follow, with the Irish League championship trophy finding a home at Seaview in —73 , with the attacking duo of Tommy Finney and Jackie Fullerton scoring 47 goals between them.

The club also set a record of going through the whole league campaign unbeaten at home, a feat which was repeated 40 years later in the —13 season.

This led to the club's first ever participation in the European Cup , in which they faced Dinamo Bucharest and had the misfortune of setting the record for a defeat in that competition, losing 0—11 in the away leg on 3 October In the —76 season the Crues won the league for the second time, largely aided by the goalscoring of Ronnie McAteer who scored 20 league goals in 22 games.

Sandwiched in between these successes was a County Antrim Shield and Carlsberg Cup success in — The second championship triumph resulted in the never-to-be-forgotten European Cup-tie with Liverpool which saw the brave Cruemen fall to the might of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack among others at Anfield by just 0—2 through a Phil Neal penalty and a Toshack strike.

The home leg which followed was played before a crowd hanging from the rafters that would undoubtedly give the current health and safety legislators a heart attack.

However the s also saw The Troubles begin to affect Irish League football, with two incidents in particular affecting the football club.

On 21 August there were more than 1, police officers on duty for a match between Crusaders and Cliftonville, more than has ever been recorded at a football match in the United Kingdom.

Johnston had left the club in , and after a two-year spell of management by ex-player Norman Pavis, Ian Russell took charge of the club in On 73 minutes it was Crusaders who went close but Philip Lowry watched as his shot crashed off the post into the path of Ross Clarke but his shot was welled saved by Rory Brown.

It was all Crusaders by this stage and Chris Hegarty could have opened the scoring on 79 minutes but he screwed his shot wide at the back post.

Crrusaders only had to wait a few more minutes before they finally got the goal they had been close too so many times.

A handball in the box by a Glentoran defender was spotted by the referee and he had no hesitation in pointing to the spot from which which Jordan Forsythe cooly slotted home and it was Crusaders on 82 minutes.

Two minutes later it was with a goal of the season contender from Ross Clarke. Ross collected the ball ouside the box before cutting in beating defender after defender as he made his way across the penalty area before dispatching the ball past Rory Brown into the corner of the net.

Three well deserved points and and convincing display from Stephen Baxters side leaving them in third place in the Premiership table. Work and prep now starts as the focus turns to next Saturday and the visit to Seaview of Portadown 3pm.

Team Line Up Crusaders are at home this week in the Danske Bank Premiership and Glentoran are the visitors for this top clash. Crusaders will want a reaction to last weeks defeat to Glenavon at Mourneview Park while Glentoran will be looking to keep the Premiership climb going after a poor start to the season.

Crusaders where by their own admission below par last week and will be bursting to show their real quality this time. Sean O'Neill was a late call off against Glenavon with Gerard Doherty stepping in with only minutes to kick off so we wait to see who starts in goals.

Paul Heatley got back to the bench last week after being out with an injury and may be in line for a recall today. The midfield was changed last week with fresh legs getting a start so Stephen Baxter has a headache as to will get the nod this time round having watched several players getting game time.

Stephen Baxter will demand three points to stay in touch at the top as we head to the busy Christmas period and also to try and build momentum for a title challenge.

Glentoran after a poor start to the season are beginning to show signs of a squad that will justify the large wage bill and squad they have put together.

Defeat at Seaview in the Shield Final on Wednesday will have no bearing on todays game as Mick McDermott fielded nearly a totally different side to the previous game.

Mick McDermott will have his team up for this game as they gather a head of steam in the Premiership and they will certainly want to get up the table as fast as they can.

It will provide vital support as clubs are either forced to play without fans or not able to play football at all, owing to COVID restrictions.

As a thank you, National Lottery players, who make a difference every time they buy a ticket, will also get a range of benefits — including free tickets once stadia have fully reopened and VIP experiences with the Northern Ireland national side.

The clubs are important parts of their communities and the funding recognises their role beyond just a 3pm kick off on a Saturday afternoon.

They provide a source of pride to their local areas and have been at the heart of their communities through the duration of the pandemic. The funds will play a key role in ensuring that the clubs can continue to exist and operate during the pandemic.

The money will be distributed by the Irish FA to clubs ensuring their continued survival. We would like to express our sincere thanks to The National Lottery for their support in safeguarding the immediate future of our clubs.

We are extremely grateful to The National Lottery for this vital funding package, which will go a long way in helping these clubs keep going until fans are safely able to return to grounds and stadia.

I am a huge football fan and I think all fans will be delighted to know that their clubs are getting the support they need. Work continues on a partnership with the Scottish FA.

The money for these initiatives is coming from a National Lottery promotional fund. Glenavon laid siege to Crusaders goal but Gerard Doherty and his defence stood strong for the rest of the half.

Glenavon came out the second half all guns blazing and equalised on the 49th with a back post Jack O'Mahony header.

Crusaders will look to build on last weeks solid win against Dungannon Swifts while Glenavon will be out to prove a point after losing to Linfield in controversial circumstances.

Crusaders have had another good week at training and preparations are complete to take on Glenavon. Sean O'Neill cemented his number one position with a good performance against the Swifts including a penalty save and the back four also provided great cover and should remain unchanged.

Stephen shuffled the midfield last week and it worked but Paul Heatley could return to the squad for selection after injury and the bench could be his starting point as he is eased back in.

We will not face Matthew Snoddy as he cannot play against Crusaders under his loan deal agreement.

Glenavon will want to bounce back after feeling aggrieved last week and they will be sent out to get the three points. So all set for another tough tackling contest between the two sides.

C'mon the Crues and Keep The Faith. We know you cannot follow Crusaders to Mourneview Park on Saturday but you can still watch the game live as it will be streamed.

Discount applies automatically and deal ends at midnight on Cyber Monday 30th November It was a good day at Seaview today when they defeated Dungannon Swifts in the Danske Bank Premiership with a commanding performance that will please manager Stephen Baxter.

It was a game that saw three penalties given and Crusaders scored their two while Dungannon missed the one they where given.

The game started with both sides looking to get an nearly breakthrough and Dungannon Swifts got that chance when referee Andy Davey pointed to the spot after Rodney Brown tripped a Swifts forward just inside the box.

Dougie Wilson stepped up to take the spot kick but Sean O'Neill guessed correctly and made a good save down to his left and the score remained Crusaders got it together after that early let off and went close on 13 minutes after Sam Johnston dropped a corner but the first two attempts on goal where blocked before Jamie McGonigle shot across goal and the ball was cleared.

Crusaders did not have to wait long before did score. Dungannon Swifts where awarded a free kick 30 yards out after a foul by Aidan Wilson and up stepped Dougie Wilson who lifted the ball over the wall and into the net leaving Sean 'O'Neill no chance and it was level at Crusaders went close from the restart but the Swifts goal remained intact.

Crusaders where in control but corners came and went plus Rory Hale did well getting to the libne but his cross was cut out with 35 minutes gone.

Chris Hegarty cleared a Swifts attack as they looked threatening and when Swifts got another free kick from exactly the same spot as earlier Dougie Wilson put his kick over the bar with four minutes left on the clock.

Crusaders got a penalty within two minutes of the restart when a Swifts players hand touched the ball and Bem Kennedy cooly stepped up to put his spot kick away and Crusaders where in the lead.

Crusaders started to knock the ball about and Adam Lecky was unlucky not to score after he got on the end ofan Adam Lecky knockdown and Rory Hales cross went by everyone.

On this occasion an attempted cross came off a Swifts defenders hand and the visitors where shocked it was given. When it had all calmed down it was Ben Kennedy again who stepped up and he scored again to make it Jamie McGonigle thought he had got Crusaders fourth on 63 minutes but after a long hard think the ref blew for offside and the goal was chalked off.

Sean O'Neill stayed alert and made a good save to keep Crusaders ahead while his defence did well on two occasions also.

The game by this stage was starting to take on a familiar look and Crusaders eased to the whistle and eventually won So three points and a sold performance with happy faces around Seaview.
